Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester City

Saturday 14th August 2010

Kick-off 1245

Revenge is a dish that is best served cold and City will be hoping to serve up their own, special recipe when they visit White Hart lane for the season opener.

It was Spurs who ended City’s bid for a fourth place finish when Peter Crouch scored to give them a 1-0 win at Eastlands in May but the blues will be confident of taking something from North London.

City have again invested heavily in the transfer market and will be looking to new signings Yaya Toure, David Silva, Jerome Boateng and Aleksander Kolarov to push City into the promised land of the top four and Champions League qualification.

Spurs will get a taste of what City want with a qualifying game against Swiss side Young Boys and have been linked with a host of City names over the summer, most notably Craig Bellamy, Stephen Ireland and Micah Richards.

Key Opponent – Jermain Defoe

The striker scored England’s goal in the win over Slovenia in the World Cup and is one of the most dangerous strikers around. City will need to keep him quiet if they are to take anything from North London.

Teams News:

City have an embarrassment of riches to choose from but the big question will be who he chooses between the sticks with Joe Hart challenging the fit again Shay Given. New signings Yaya Toure, David Silva, Jerome Boateng and Aleksander Kolarov are expected to make their debuts while Mario Balotelli will miss the game.

Spurs have injury problems with Jonathon Woodgate, Jamie O’Hara and David Bentley all missing the game.

OTBM Match Predictions

I am going for a stalemate in Saturday’s opener. I think both teams will attack and defend equally well so I’m going for a 2-2 draw.

Columnist Brian Roban

Like many city fans I’m excited and nervous about the early Saturday and first match of the 10/11 season. Last season Spurs did the double on us and the home game putting the coffin nail into forth place and champions league spot. This been fresh in the players mind and being the first game of the new campaign I believe City will go all out to shake off the ghost of Christmas past and show the anti city critics what is in store for the future. Spurs are no easy task at White Hart Lane, Harry has built and moulded a strong midfield and defence and with so many attacking options which we seen at Eastlands, every long ball Given drove up a Spurs player was there on it. If City can keep control of the midfield we certainly have the fire power up front to the damage.

While my heart and dreams at night tells Me City will win 4-0, my brain says Rodney Marsh’s prediction of a 1-1 draw could be nearer the result. Going down to London I’m sure Mancini may well take a draw where it offered before kick off as he knows Tottenham are a force to be reckoned with. All that been said City have the players now. The players and city fans alike need the belief that it can and will be done.  Last season was a roller coaster of a ride at times but City were up there and this season with the new signings helping in the quality and depth of the squad it can spur ( excuse the pun ) us on to that coveted top 4 spot, and who knows but sure dreamt about a serious run at the title.

C’mon City.

Brian’s Prediction: 1-1

Columnist Callum Rothwell

I think the game will be very tough, I think Tottenham will be up for it, but both teams have a lot to lose. This game could decide 4th place already, and so a defeat for either team will be devastating. I think Tottenham will start off the better side, but we’ll get back into it towards the end of the first half, and snatch a 1-0 lead through Adebayor. Then I think the game will be more open in the second half, but City too strong and win 2-0, the other through Yaya Toure.

Callum’s Prediction: A 2-0 win for City

Columnist Jake Hartley

The hugely anticipated opening clash with Tottenham is just days away after a long wait. I feel the game is going to be quite close as neither side will want to lose the opening fixture of the season. For City to win, I think a lot will depend on the fitness of the players returning from international duties and also if the new additions will fit comfortable into the premier league game. Personally, I would be happy with a draw, but if we want to be fighting to break into the champion’s league then to sneak a win would be great so early on in the season.

Jake’s Prediction – Tottenham Hotspur 1 – 1 Manchester City (Emmanuel Adebayor)

This is a huge game for us considering how we lost out on 4th place to them last season, I expect nothing less than a 1-1 draw. But just like any blue, I’m completely aware and willing to be bias and predict a 1-2 win for city. No doubt there will be goals in this one; it’s just Harry’s style. The enigma is really how city will come out and play and I hope that will raise a few eyebrows.

Doe’s Prediction: A 2-1 win for City

OTBM Regular Contributor Real Mancs Are Blue

I predict a win for Tottenham. Our record against the Spuds is poor to say the least; in fact we have lost more time to them than any other club since the premiership began.
Combine the facts we will be fielding a team that has barely played together, Carlos Tevez once again whinging that he isn’t enjoying football and a defence that has barely played against premier league opposition, its going to be a tough game.

The battle worth watching will be Kolorov Vs Aaron Lennon, it will certainly give an indication of how well Kolorov will fair this season.

RMAB’s Prediction: I predict Tottenham to win 2-0

What do you think? Agree with our predictions or have one of your own? Let us know your thoughts.

In fact, as well as Fantasy Football, let’s start a predictions league. 3 points for a spot on score, one for the correct result but incorrect score. We’ll work out a league table somehow. All predictions must be received 5 minutes prior to kick off.

City visit Upton Park for the final game of the season, looking for the point which will secure a fifth place finish.

The blues are two points clear of Aston Villa in sixth place but have a far better goal difference that the Midlands outfit and one point in East London will be enough to secure their highest finish since 1992.

But City manager Roberto Mancini will be looking for a win to finish the season after a run of four games that has yielded just four points, which has meant missing out on a place in the top four and next season’s Champions League qualifiers.

The Hammers Premier League future was secured after they beat Wigan 3-2 in their last home game and will be looking to end a dismal season on a high. The Hammers have struggled to perform this season and manager Gianfranco Zola was rumoured to be facing the axe and his fate will be decided at the end of the season.

Team News

City will be without England men Gareth Barry and Joleon Lescott, as well as Ireland’s Shay Given and Stephen Ireland. Michael Johnson and Martin Petrov are still out.

West Ham will be without Jack Collinson, Valon Behrami, Keiron Dyer, Heria Ilunga and Zavon Hines.

Form:

West Ham: DWLWL

City: WLDWL

Over The Blue Moon Prediction: West Ham 1-3 City

Was toying with a draw but I think City will want to make the Hammers pay for the blues failure to make fourth place with a good win.

City take on Spurs in a match that will have a huge bearing on who finishes fourth in this season’s Premiership.

A win for City, together with victory at West Ham on Sunday will guarantee Champions League football next season at Eastlands, while a Spurs win will leave the Londoners four points clear of City going into the weekend’s final games.

Spurs will be looking to win fourth place after they were denied on the final day of the 2005/06 season when many of their players fell ill through food poisoning prior to their final game, ironically at West Ham, City’s final opponents.

City boss Roberto Mancini has responded to his Spurs counterpart’s comments about the pressure being on City by saying “There is no pressure. It is a football match, not a war. Wednesday’s game will probably decide where we finish this season. If we win we have probably a 70-80% of getting fourth.”

Team News

City will be without Joleon Lescott who was ruled out for the remainder of the season with a hamstring injury, while Michael Johnson and Martin Petrov are also still injured. Marton Fulop will play his second game in place of the injured Shay Given. Gareth Barry could also return to the team after missing

Former City defender Vedran Corluka and Nico Kranjcar both have ankle injuries while Carlo Cudicini has a broken wrist and will miss the game. So too will Jonathan Woodgate who is out with a groin strain. Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes is doubtful as is Ledley King.

Teams:

City (from): Nielsen, Fulop, Onuoha, Richards, Kay, Boyata, Kompany, Toure, Bridge, Garrido, Sylvinho, Adam Johnson, Cunningham, Zabaleta, De Jong, Barry, Vieira, Bellamy, Wright-Phillips, Tevez, Santa Cruz, Adebayor, Ibrahim, Nimely.

Spurs (from): Gomes, Dawson, King, Assou-Ekotto, Bale, Kaboul, Huddlestone, Bentley, Lennon, Modric, Pavlyuchenko Gudjohnsen, Defoe, Crouch, Jenas, Alnwick, Palacios, Bassong, Walker, Rose, Livermore.

League Form (Last Five)

City: WWLDW

Spurs: LWWLW

Over The Blue Moon Prediction: City 1-0 Spurs

Both teams will go for the win but I predict City will edge a pulsating game

Blue meets red as Manchester’s two clubs clash at Eastlands, with both eager for points to boost their relevant campaigns.

City will be looking for the win which will keep them in fourth place ahead of Spurs while United are sitting in second place attempting to keep pace with leaders Chelsea. The two clubs meet for the fourth time this season with United winning two and City one.

City have hit form at just the right time and have scored 14 goals in their last three games, while United seem to be stuttering towards the end of the season.

A win for City will be their fifth in the Premier League over United at Eastlands while the reds will take their tally to eight at Eastlands with victory.

Team News

Wayne Bridge could make a return at left back following a five match absence and the blues have also been boosted by the return to fitness of Stephen Ireland and Patrick Vieira, while Pablo Zabaleta is also available following his two match suspension.

Michael Johnson and Martin Petrov are still out with knee injuries while Joleon Lescott is struggling with a hamstring problem.

United hope to have Wayne Rooney available following an ankle injury, while Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand are both doubtful through injury, but Wes Brown, Nani and Michael Owen are definitely out.

OTBM Prediction: City 3-2 United

Another tight game that the blues will edge.

City take on Birmingham in the final game of the weekend and with Spurs not playing Arsenal until Wednesday, it is a golden opportunity to consolidate fourth place and keep the pressure on the chasing pack to keep up.

Pablo Zabaleta will sit out the game as he serves the final match of his suspension while Micah Richards and Sylvinho are doubtful due to knee and calf injuries respectively.

Definitely out are Joleon Lescott, Martin Petrov and Michael Johnson, while Wayne Bridge and Stephen Ireland also miss the game through injury.

Lee Carsley is still out with an ankle injury for Birmingham. Defender David Murphy and Striker Garry O’Connor are also out injured while Joe Hart is unavailable to play against his employers, meaning Maik Taylor will deputise.

Teams:

Manchester City (from): Given, Nielsen, Richards, Zabaleta, Toure, Boyata, Kompany, Garrido, Sylvinho, Onuoha, Wright-Phillips, Bellamy, Barry, Vieira, De Jong, Johnson, Tevez, Adebayor, Santa Cruz, Ibrahim.

Birmingham (from): Taylor, Carr, Parnaby, Johnson, Dann, Ridgewell, Gardner, Larsson, Ferguson, Bowyer, Michel, Fahey, McFadden, Jerome, Benitez, Phillips, Tainio, Doyle.

League Form (Last Five):

City: DWLWW

Birmingham: DLLDD

Over The Blue Moon Prediction: City 4-0 Birmingham

Another high scoring game resulting in another three points for the blues. Feeling confident after predicting the Wigan score spot on.
